Rain Bows

A trip to Noup Head through slurry and over rutted tracks in brilliant sunshine this evening to see if the Gannets are there. I can see the clouds gathering and before long I shout into the wind that I can see rain heading over the sea towards us. I’m wrong; it’s hailstones. As we are buffeted back to the car I have one side of me warm and dry and the other cold and completely soaking. Back at the car there’s a double rainbow.

I never did understand why the outer rainbow has its colours reversed, nor why the sky is brighter inside the inner rainbow. Maybe tonight I ought to find out.
