Making a mark

Coriolano ‘Gino’ Caprara and Roberto Pendini were Italian prisoners of war in Orkney. They helped build the Churchill Barriers which created causeways to link islands. They are also our last link to the artists and craftspeople who created the fragile Italian Chapel from scraps during the most desperate of times. Here’s Gino signing a copy of the Italian translation of Philip Paris’s book Orkney’s Italian Chapel: La Chiesetta Della Pace translated by Inga Sempel. Behind him are Roberto with John Muir, who has worked tirelessly to help preserve and celebrate the Chapel and its links to Italy.
