Carrion Carry On

There’s a Carrion Crow on the handrail of the small bridge across the canal. It’s a dark, iridescent blue against the dense green foliage behind.

They are a species I wrote about in my childhood nature notebooks:

It’s a dark day and difficult to get good photographs. I’m going to try. Last time I took some Carrion Crow portraits was in the middle of summer and they were suffering from the heat. Imagine being dressed all in black and having no sweat glands.

I’m enchanted by this bird. It calls, a harsh, rasping call.

Then it raises all its feathers as if it has goosebumps and shivers them.

What an outstanding bird.

UK law classifies Carrion Crows as a pest species and allows landowners to kill them by destroying their nests and eggs, trapping them, and shooting them with semi-automatic weapons.

The law is an ass.
