Bempton birds – the miracle of flight

The power of flight still astonishes me. If only I could be up there with the birds at RSPB Bempton Cliffs.

The Kittiwakes are the most elegant fliers:

The Razorbills are comedy Puffins dressed in civvies:

The Guillemots have a lot of freedom in their flying style, although they always look slightly haunted, as if pursued by invisible ghosts:

And as for the Gannets, they are the B52 Bombers of these Yorkshire skies:

My favourite flying style has to be the Fulmar. Their progress through the air is so smooth, so effortless, so alive to every air current, that they are truly masters of the air.
