Nuthatch

I’m watching a Nuthatch come in to a forest clearing in Italy and pick up sunflower seeds. They are quick. There must be a predator or predators which have placed considerable evolutionary pressure on their species. They wouldn’t appear quite so paranoid otherwise.

A quick food grab and it’s off.

Then it’s back again:

There’s nothing quite like them:

At least not in Europe. There are plenty of other species of Nuthatch in Burma and Indonesia and Thailand and Nepal, just not here. No wonder they seem so different from the rest of our birds.

I’m glad they made it here, all the way from their ancestral homelands in the mountains of central and southern Asia.
