Declining Kittiwakes
The weather is dramatic and so are the Kittiwakes calling below:
They are such refined and elegant birds.
Their families are growing on small ledges at Noup Head on Westray in Orkney:
The adults are busy provisioning their nests:
In Newcastle upon Tyne anti-bird netting has caught many of the chicks on commercial buildings and doomed them to a lingering death. Here they are free from netting, but just as badly affected by pollution and overfishing.
I hope future generations of people will get the same thrill that I do from seeing them successfully produce their next generation.
