Colour on a grey day

There are Dartmoor ponies on Trendlebere Down on East Dartmoor:

It’s a heathland habitat which was largely destroyed by fire, caused by people, in 1997. Now it’s being kept from becoming forest by ponies:

I walk down the hill into Yarner Wood.

It’s a dull day but the male Chaffinches make it bright:

They have lots of attitude:

And the male Great Spotted Woodpecker is very active:

The red on the nape and rump are such an intense colour, especially on such a grey day as this:

And then, the lemon sherbet of the bird world, a male Siskin comes to visit. It’s a little ray of sunshine:
