Tree Sparrows

There’s a sparrow with a chocolate-coloured head peering at me. There’s a clue to its identity in that I’m at Tree Sparrow Farm at RSPB Old Moor.

I’ve never seen one before because the UK’s population of Tree Sparrows collapsed by 93 per cent between 1970 and 2008.

They are on the Birds of Conservation Concern 4 Red List. That means a severe historic decline without subsequent recovery. They are birds of farmland and have had their habitat destroyed by farming practice.

If only every farm was Tree Sparrow Farm.
