I Trulli love – stone roofs

There are stone roofs in many parts of the UK. From the honey-coloured stone of the Cotswolds to the grey of the North Yorkshire Moors to flagstones on the roofs in windswept Orkney, stone is a beautiful traditional material for roofing. It’s also very heavy and needs proper maintenance of the supporting structure for it to last.

Here in Puglia in the south of Italy the Trulli have beautiful stone roofs:

Here’s one which is a guest cottage for rent, set amongst trees in an idyllic location:

They need a small cap to ensure they are watertight:

The external stone steps are a great way to access your roof, although I’m glad that the vast majority of them are a single-storey:
