Earthballs – forty years ago in my nature notebooks

The Common Earthball, Scleroderma citrinum, is a curious fungus which used to be known as Scleroderma aurantium. Here’s my nature notebooks entry about one I found forty years ago:

In the woods in Somerset I found these beautiful specimens:

They smell sour. In Devon I found this specimen deep in the woods which lives up to the other charming common name of Pigskin Poison Puffball:
