The cruise visitors are a mixed blessing for the Islands of Orkney. They have become an important part of the economy, but only for some. They cause disruption and inconvenience to locals, with closed streets, restricted access and large crowds. The visitors are also sometimes not respectful of the local culture or customs. Meeting the needs of the cruise ships, however, is an increasing part of the Islands’ economy.
