Green Veined White – forty years ago in my nature notebooks

Green Veined White Butterfly - 1970s Nature Notebooks - The Hall of Einar

Butterflies are very noticeable insects. They have large bright wings and fly during the day. How they escape being eaten by birds is an evolutionary wonder. Forty years ago today I was thrilled to find a Green Veined White Butterfly and record it in my nature notebooks. I was 12 years old and still had some problems spelling after a dodgy education at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St Patrick’s School.

Here’s a beautiful specimen in the garden at Einar.

And again.

I should really have photographed the underside of the wings as that’s where the green veins are.
