Tree-ring cobbles

On Westray the traces of Lake Orcadie are everywhere. 380 million years ago this land we now call Westray was in the Southern Hemisphere and covered by a vast inland lake called Lake Orcadie. These cobbles are from sedimentary rocks with layer upon layer of sediment compressed and turned to rock in candy stripes. Each layer shows one year of the sediments laid in Lake Orcadie, just like tree rings show the passing of the years.

I think about that for a moment and then reassess whether anything I’m currently thinking is of any importance.
