I was amazed to find out that anyone lives on Flotta. I thought the entire Island had been evacuated to build one large oil terminal for the Piper and Claymore oil fields. The oil terminal was opened in 1977 by Tony Benn.
In 1910, Flotta had a population of 431 people including two blacksmiths, four carpenters and three dressmakers. Just 80 people still live there.
